I’ve been waiting on my uncle to come visit so that he can take a day trip to Austin with me. This trip has one purpose only, to go to T-Locs and get a Sonoran hot dog! You’re probably thinking, “wait, she’s driving 2 hours for a hot dog?” Yes, and it was worth every minute.

I had my first Sonoran hot dog in Tucson about 4 years ago at a place called BK tacos. While in Austin, the guy at T-Locs, which stands for Tucson Locals, asked how I’d heard about his place. I told him how I enjoyed BK’s and he assured me that I’d be having an authentic experience, because the bolillo buns are flown in fresh daily. He did not lie! My hot dog was even better than I remembered.

A Sonoran hot dog uses bolillo in place of the traditional hot dog bun. It’s sort of like a baguette but more soft. Then a bacon wrapped hotdog is placed in the toasted bun. Next, it’s topped with pinto beans, tomatoes, onion, jalapeño sauce, mustard and mayo. After the first bite I guarantee it will be your new hot dog standard.

T-Locs doesn’t just limit themselves to the hotdog. They also have burritos, fries, tacos and tortas. I tried the carne asada taco and it was very meaty, tender and flavorful. I go back to Austin soon and already can’t wait to visit T-Locs again.
